Inspired by a GRANDMOTHER’S TOUCH!
My Grandmother was a crafter. She made everything from scratch, from growing our food to making clothing and quilts.
As a small child (4 or 5), my she started teaching me to quilt, using scraps from clothing that was not being worn any longer. She used the fabric floral printed flour sacks to make pretty dresses with sashes that tied in a bow in the middle of my back. With any fabric left, she helped me make doll clothing, using a needle and thread.
At 13 years old, I had my first sewing class with someone other than my Grandmother. By this time I was making dresses from pictures, making my patterns from newspaper. During this class, I used my first sewing machine and discovered that there were patterns that could be bought in a store. I was hooked. I had found something that I would do for the rest of my life, no matter what else I did as a career.
CHOOSING MY PATH.
Information Technology was my second passion. I started my career in 1971 at the Aetna Life & Casualty as a computer programmer, and ended it as a Systems Analyst at The Hartford Insurance Group in 1987. I still keep up with technology and love the computer, but my love of fabrics had developed into a form of ART THERAPY to relieve the stress of my job. I wanted to quit 2 years before I actually did, but I was so used to getting a regular paycheck, that I was afraid to quit and take my chances. When part-time was offered to us, I jumped at the chance to see if I could make it on a paycheck from a 3 day work week. I opened my small boutique on Friday, Saturday & Sunday, then worked at the Insurance Company on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. On Monday, I shopped in New York for fabrics, jewelry & other things to supplement what I could make. Everything ran smoothly, but I was still afraid to totally quit my job.
One night about 2am, I was working on my first big fashion show, I was called in to fix a problem. This was nothing new since my job for the past 2 years was Trouble Shooter for the Department. I had been called in more times than I can remember.
But this time, with the Show pending, the call was the last straw. I went in at 2am that Sunday morning, but when I got a call hours the same day moments before the show, to my suprise, I quit over the phone.
I was going to go in to collect my things, when I realized I had nothing to collect. I had been bringing my belongings home for a long time. So from May of 1987 in Hartford, Connecticut until now in Savannah, Georgia my work has evolved according to the stages of my life.
Fiber Art is a part of who I am. I hope a little of my spirit is passed onto to you through my work.
